It is already possible Carry the National Identity Document (DNI) in digital format on the mobile phone. All Spanish citizens can use the new official application called “Midni” to legally identify through the smartphone.
In fact, “midni” is nothing more than a Virtual representation of physical IDthat does not replace it and that is connected to the centralized document issuance system.
Thus, this application, developed by the Ministry of Interior and National Police, allows citizens to identify safely, such as when they do it with their physical document, when they are asked to prove their identity, either before an agent of the authority or to carry out any administrative procedure.
The app is now available for download in official application stores, although its functionalities are limited, more procedures and services will be added.
Of course, it is valid only in the national territory, so it cannot be used to identify when traveling abroad. At least for the moment, since in 2026 new functionalities will be added, as recognized by the Ministry of Interior.
How to get the digital ID
In order to obtain the digital ID, it is necessary that the national physical identity document is in force and the mobile phone must be updated to the latest version of the operating system, to be protected against any type of threat.
The first thing to do is download the Midni app in the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Once done, ID DNI can be activated through a procedure for which, inevitably, processes of physical form will have to be carried out.
Once the application is installed and the terms and conditions of the service have been accepted, it is necessary to move on to the activation of the digital ID. To do this, there are three options, and it is necessary to make an appointment.
-In a National Police Documentation Unit, asking for an appointment.
-In the National Police website if you have the physical ID and a DNI reader. You must know the pin of your ID certificate and this cannot be expired or revoked. You can access the registry through Midni.gob.es
-In a documentation update point (PAD), which is located in the National Police Documentation Units. Surely it sounds to you because it is a kind of ATM. There you could go without the need to request an appointment.
How the DNI is activated in the app
When you register you will have to link the Midni app to your mobile phone number. You will be offered a single use code and you will be guided by the linking process.
Click on “start activation” and enter the necessary data: ID number and support number. Once proven, the electronic ID in the application will be activated.
Done this, you can start identifying with your digital ID. Every time you need it, a QR code will be displayed with three data display options, which you can select depending on those you want or need to share. So you will not have to offer all the information included in your ID in cases that only require one of them.
-Dni Age: shows the photograph, name and majority.
-Dni simple: shows photography, name, surname, sex and validity of the ID.
-Dni Complete: shows all the data of the physical document.
You can choose, if for example you only need to certify your age, the first option. Thus the person before which you identify you do not have to know your address or the name of your parents.
