If you’re here, it’s because you have a phone from Xiaomi, Poco or Redmi and because you want to see how save more than 50% of the weight in the photographs you take with your phone’s camera.
Learn how to save photo weight with this Miui trick
A long time ago, we had phones with 6/8/16GB of storage and in them we could have hundreds of photographs without any problemsbut of course, phone cameras have come a long way, and with it the size and weight of the cameras.
Due to the large improvements in photo sensors incorporated in our smartphones, the size of the images and videos we capture is increasingly larger in size in order to have the best possible quality.
Maybe you don’t use your camera much, but think that you can easily reduce the weight of a photo by more than half without noticing any change or worsen its quality, would you do it? Of course you would.
Imagine when you have today’s “normal” images of 10-20 megabytes and multiply by several years of use of your phone, you will easily have several GB of “lost” storage in those photos.
Reduce the weight of your current images with HEIF or HEIC format
The best thing about this trick, is that it comes included in Miui’s own system, and that it you don’t need any extra function or any external applicationonly just activate a button!.
We were already talking more than 1 year and a half ago about the hEIF or HEIC format introduced in Xiaomi and their phones (copied from Iphone), plus we provide you with an application for reduce your current photos!
how to enable HEIF format on your camera with Miui?
Now then, so that from now on you can enjoy a reduction of the weight of your photos, you have to follow the following steps.
- We go to the Miui stock camera and we hit the hamburger menu upper right.
- Once inside we look for the option that says SETTINGS with the gear icon.
Once inside the camera settings, we will find an option that says “HEIF format“, by activating this option we will be reducing by half the weight of a photograph taken with our camera!
As you can read in the description of the Heif Format option itself, it is possible that some third-party applications (Facebook, Instagram, Tic Toc Toc, Twitter) do not work correctly with this new formatyou will have to see for yourself depending on your usage.
Comparison of weight in HEIF format and JPG format
It seems incredible what this feature gives us, but it has some “bad things”, and that is that it is possible that your phone, does not show this option
Mainly, this HEIF option is focused on the phones with the best cameramainly more than 48Mpx, however, you lose nothing by looking for this option.
If you have it available, see for yourself what you can reduce the weight of those images, I leave you an example (you can see with the hEIF tag which one it would be).
First image with the hEIF format 3000X4000px from a Little F3 with the factory default settings and a weight of 2.98MB.
Second image, same place, same time, same camera settings, but the format is now JPG (the default), it has a weight of 6.45MB.
does the HEIF format improve my photos?
As you can see the difference is more than 50% in 1 single photographimagine if you apply this to your entire gallery! We let you try it for yourself, and see that practically You will not notice any difference between one image and anotheronly the weight!
